The Helixoide

Well the Development server is doing very well. The mail server is fully operational, sub domains are working and my personal site is doing quite well. So far i am using a nucleus CMS page as my home page and i have a WP blog and a PHP-fusion site up and running in my sub domain at the moment. not sure what else will be put onto the server but everything is doing great.

new server hx-redbull is up and running, we are currently having some issues with the router that rebull is connected to but those should be resolved over the weekend. not really sure what rebull is going to do but it will have 24/7 hosting of some website or another

So the development server i am currently working on is back up and running after being taken down last night for maintenance. everything went smoothly and the webserver now hosts Zsizsi’s new blog called Zsizsi/Ping24 no sure what he is going to do with it but it should be interesting. Also going to give you some pictures of the helixoide core and som other random stuff

Well not many people know this, but Helixoide recently got its first dedicated server. I fixed up an old gateway I had lying around and installed ubuntu server on it. It had apache2, php5, mysql, openSSH, and more. I installed phpBB3 on it and for 3 days every thing was great. We had our first dedicated server and decided to play around on it. Then yesterday morning around 10:00am est the server’s power supply burned out for good. Thats how our first dedicated server came into existence and then left in a period of 3 days. RIP hx-1, you were a good server for the 3 days you were with us.

Well the title says it all, We are hopefully if all the approve stuff goes through, be creating a seperate network dedicated to the school only using open source software to do it. We made the first step in our goal to bring open source technology to our local community today when we talked to a school official. Our plans start off small. Our first goal is to get a computer or two dedicated to running linux in the schools library. After that we will start doing much more major projects such as a whole seperate wifi network for students to use. After that we may set up a student website system and a seperate shared drive and printing system. Another one of our goals is to make an irc network for the school but in terms of ournplans that is absolute last. so a recap on our OSS integrate plans:

1) 1 or 2 linux computers

2) a small network of linux computers

3) student wifi + 5 or 6 linux computers

4) larger student network + printers

6) website integrated with network + full school linux integration

7) more wide spread wifi + a much larger network that can handle more stuff

a seperate shared drive for students using the oss system

9) a complete seperate user system with shared drives for all who want/need them

10) a mroe wide spread web site deployment

11) itnegrate the oss school system website with the normal website (rss feed + calendar stuff)

12) irc network hosted on a completely different bunch of servers because of a tendency to be hacked.

Our system will have all the basic blocks and firewalls that the normal network does but they will be open source. if possible we might be able to integrate our seperate user network into the existing school users system to aliveate stress on our data bases.  Now remember this is all hypothetical, we still have alot to learn and we also don’t know how much the school officials will allow but this is a basic outline of what we hope to do.
